on Walnut Mountain

black raspberry brambles
consumed the gullies
alongside our dirt road
where corn fields met
with cherrywood trees
so thick you couldn’t
see the little house within
stone fences built long ago
no longer served to hinder
access to Walnut Mountain
while one morning watched,
little fawn drank from the pool.
